Define Your Style: How to Bring Your Passion and Personality to Life When Designing Your Kitchen
Posted by KraftMaid on Apr 12th 2016
“Many people can feel overwhelmed when taking on the job of planning, designing, renovating or redecorating their kitchen. Having a trigger helps to get you started. Keep track of styles, colors and spaces that move you, make you smile, or yes, even ‘just feel right’ to you, before you embark on your design journey. Try these tips and you’ll be on your way defining your own style and designing your own kitchen, one step at a time. Oh, and don’t forget to breathe!”

- Get Inspired. Reflect on kitchens that give you a good feeling—whether it’s a friend’s kitchen, on a design blog or home tour, something you’ve seen in a magazine, or even in a movie. By remembering, gathering and sorting through these images and capturing them in one place, you will start to see common links about which design elements you want in your own kitchen.
- Consider Your Lifestyle. Do you have a family? Are you a chef? Do you love wine? Do you frequently host dinner parties? Is your kitchen a gathering place? All of these factors are important parts of you, and so, by extension, will be important to the design of your kitchen. To make your kitchen functional, all of these elements should play a part in the layout of a room.
- Establish Your Design Style. Take your time determining a design style that speaks to you. Whether it is modern, traditional, eclectic or country, every design style is matched to fit the homeowner’s personality and taste. Once you have a sense of your own design style, it becomes easier to create and plan a kitchen you will love.
- Create a Focal Point. Determining the focal point of any room is one of the most important elements in the design process. Is it the center island? The window overlooking the lake? The layout of your kitchen should support and complement the focal point, rather than compete with it.
- Put Color to Work. The options are limitless when it comes to the color possibilities for a room. By utilizing a simple color wheel, you can pair and determine colors that work together. Whether complementary (opposite sides of the color wheel), analogous (side by side on the color wheel), triad (three colors equally spaced apart on the color wheel) or monochromatic (one color with lighter tints and tones of that color), the right combination of finish techniques and color options can truly express your own sense of style.
- Use Online Resources. The Internet is full of websites and blogs that can help you in your search for a personal sense of style when designing your kitchen. Websites like KraftMaid.com let you search for room ideas, find design tips from professionals, learn more about color trends, review room layouts, and learn about door styles and materials. The KraftMaid “Inspiration Board” at KraftMaid.com/YourStyle helps you gather photos, statements, color swatches, and even the newest KraftMaid products into a design collage perfect to share with any designer.
